Mark 3 Armour - Redesign Breakdown

Intro

Once I had rediscovered this Iron Man movie clip I had once seen in cinemas long ago, I was eager showcase my interpretation of it in a sound redesign. This has been my biggest project to date, and I have learnt a lot throughout the process.

Breakdown

Following is a short breakdown of some of the biggest layers in this project

Metals

For the metalic armour and other metal sounds, these are grouped and routed to a main metals bus.

Robot Arms

For the robot sound design, I found layering pitched metal sounds (eg. metal cabinet samples) and electrical sounds (eg. printers, copiers) works best. Each large robitc arm in the scene is layered and routed into each own Routing Folder with the common plugin chain being: compressor> eq> effects (chorus, flanger etc). Next they are routed to a main bus and also sent to Pro Tools Subharmonic to give them some weight in the low end.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere section of the scene is built from a main room tone, layered with other types of workshop or industrial sounds.

SCI-FI

The last section added is a layer of sci-fi sounds meant to make the scene sound fuller and more futuristic to the viewer.

“EFFECTS”

Misleadingly, the title of this section that of an effects layer. More specifically, the section better describes the more physical movements of this scene. The aim of this section is to fill in the gap between the larger movements and describe what is happening off-screen.
